Earlier today, in a Twitter post, the director and writer of up-coming visual novel Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma announced the inclusion of both Japanese and English audio.

In a series of Twitter posts, Kotaro Uchikoshi released new information about the finale in the Zero Escape trilogy. Amongst the details was the option to use either Japanese or English audio for characters, which is something of interest as the prior title in the series, Virtue’s Last Reward, featured Japanese-only in Europe and English-only in North America. The Japanese version of Zero Time Dilemma will also include the audio choice.

In addition, subtitles can also be turned on and off as wanted. Although in terms of language, it seems you’ll be stuck with either English subtitles in the International version and Japanese in the Japanese edition. An Aksys blog post revealed that the subtitles will appear fully with each line rather than revealing as being spoken, with the subtitles being off as standard. The blog post also revealed that previously-read lines can also be skipped, with the option to skip unread lines as well, although it will be more skipping to a new camera view than a specific line.

In a specific change, dialogue will automatically play (i.e. going to the next line upon the audio finishing) in the non-puzzle, cinematic sections, but you have the opportunity to pause if you need a moment to read. Although if you do miss a line, don’t worry, you’ll be able to check the log for what has been said up to that point, although it’ll exclusively be within the current scene you’re in.

This perhaps confirms the lack of translation to non-English/Japanese languages, which is something of a shame if true. Although it is an understandable situation as there was trouble getting funding at one point in its development in 2014 due to lack of sales in Japan, with the fan-campaign Operation Blue Bird helping by raising awareness of the plight and doing fan-projects to display the audience size internationally. So it is possible it was only feasibly able to translate into two languages.
