At TwitchCon today, DICE revealed the first 12 minutes from Battlefield 1’s single player campaign.

Before watching this video, I sort of expected a by the numbers campaign for Battlefield 1. Even though it’s broken up into multiple war stories, I wasn’t sure if it’d be anything more than just different stories with different gameplay elements. The first 12 minutes of Battlefield 1’s single player campaign tells a different story.

The game looks super intense, as it should for a game set during World War 1, but if you look closely, there’s a lot of subtle details that make the experience all the more immersive. Watch the trailer before you go any further in this article, and see if you can spot the details for yourself.

0:00 – The song used for the beginning of the trailer can be found here if you want to hear the whole thing.

1:43 – This is frontline combat. You are not expected to survive. – This one is obviously pretty easy to spot, but how often do you see a line like that start off a mission in today’s gaming scene?

7:08 – There’s soldiers literally sitting in the field of battle cradling themselves as the battle rages on. You, as the player, can decide how to best deal with each scenario. This adds some depth to what we’re used to in campaigns from games like Battlefield and Call of Duty.

8:23 & onward – It’s not the first time we see the name and year of birth / death for a character in the game, but after this mark, the player switches through quite a few different characters. The word really comes to life when every character has a name and they aren’t just another “bot”. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the campaign plays out in regards to this.

8:47 – Following a barrage of artillery there’s madness all around, but one lone soldier is completely shell shocked and wandering around the battlefield. The player behind the controller takes out that character.

I’m sure you’ll find more details than that in the video, but the amount of detail DICE has put into the campaign (from what we’ve seen) is quite astounding. DICE seems to be taking things to whole different level in portraying the brutality and explosiveness of the first World War 1. Of course they’re obviously taking cinematic liberties with it, but there’s definitely a sense of emotion that a lot of other first person shooters don’t offer in their campaigns.

Let us know what little details you spotted that we might have missed in the trailer in the comments section. Stay tuned for continued coverage of Battlefield 1’s single player campaign as DICE continues to reveal more about it over the next few weeks.
