Following on from the X-COM-inspired Xenonauts in 2014, Goldhawk Interactive have announced the sequel to their turn-based strategy game that is in turn inspired by, unsurprisingly, X-COM 2.

One of our top 5 games to play this monthX-COM 2 drops this week and its imminent release has ignited interest in the original Xenonauts, and according to the developers themselves this is one of the main reasons for this announcement.

The London-based developers wrote the following on their official site:

“The excitement created by the imminent release of XCOM 2 has also generated interest around our plans for the Xenonauts franchise, so we felt this was a good moment for us to confirm that we are working on a sequel”

However in terms of Xenonauts 2 itself, the game will absolutely be an original project and doesn’t even follow directly from the events of the original. Story-wise the game will follow an alternate timeline from Xenonauts, focussing on the cold-war era when aliens make an attack on Earth.

There will be plenty of technological advancements as well, inluding a new engine and a shift from 2D sprites to fully three-dimensional ones. The game will also feature air combat as well as advanced AI in the form of the aliens.

We are promised a vastly improved title from the original, which itself was generally received very well:

“The experience and income we have accumulated from the development of Xenonauts mean that we can make a sequel that significantly improves and expands on the first game – and this time we can be more innovative than before.”

Goldhawk Interactive will offer an Early Access version of the game and details about this will be released in due course. For more information about the game itself, visit the official website at
