Let’s be honest, Sony’s first party lineup for this year is looking pretty bare as of right now. We have The Order: 1886, assuming that comes out this year, and possibly Driveclub, which is starting to become the PS4’s The Last Guardian. The biggest game on the horizon without a firm release date or even any concrete details is the next Uncharted game for PlayStation 4. It looks to be the PS4’s biggest exclusive title to date, and it is sure to be a system seller. While there are many things happening right now at Naughty Dog, there are still very high expectations for Uncharted PS4. Here is what we want to see from the next instalment in the Uncharted franchise.

As you may or may not know, the Uncharted series is my favorite series in gaming, hands down. Its combination of story, presentation and gameplay bring together the full package that has shown through on the PS3 and the Vita, and these are the main aspects that I’m hoping to see in Uncharted PS4. While it is always difficult to tell which treasure Nathan Drake  I think we are all assuming that he will be in the game  will be hunting down next, I still hope to see Uncharted’s story as good as ever. The characters, the writing and the plot points are always unexpected and brilliant, and, with Amy Hennig’s writing, I hope that those will continue in the next instalment.

The new generation of consoles mainly upgraded the processing power from the previous generation which allow for better graphics. With this said, and with Naughty Dog being the best in the industry at presentation, I expect that Uncharted PS4 will have the best graphics we’ve seen on the new consoles. The voice acting  which should include Nolan North as Drake and Emily Rose as Elena Fisher among others  will also be excellent. Naughty Dog co-president Christophe Balestra has said that the game will “push storytelling and performance capture” and that there will be a “big jump” in terms of graphics compared to Naughty Dog’s previous games.

Those are the obvious ones. However, Uncharted is not known for its gameplay. Though usually above average, the gameplay in the Uncharted games have been overshadowed by the other aspects of the game. I want to see this change in Uncharted PS4. I am not saying that I want it to become a game about the shooting, but I hope that Naughty Dog can refine the shooting, climbing and puzzles so that they are memorable and live up to the standards set by the other aspects of the series instead of being just another third person shooter. I am also hoping that the multiplayer will innovate as The Last of Us’ did. Naughty Dog has been improving on multiplayer throughout its past few games, and I hope they can keep doing this in Uncharted PS4 by bringing over what makes Uncharted, Uncharted.

Uncharted-2 train

I am worried about what might be going on at Naughty Dog, however. Four key people in the development of the game have left Naughty Dog in as many months. Most notably, Amy Hennig, the lead writer; Justin Richmond, the game’s director; and Todd Stashwick, the voice in the teaser trailer, were all either let go, left, or recast. While Naughty Dog has said that these have not affected the game’s development process, I can’t help but be a bit skeptical about that. When the game was first teased at the Spike launch event, most of us were hoping that it would have a 2015, possibly even 2014 release. However, with these recent changes to the team, there is a part of me that thinks the game won’t see its release until as late as 2016.

Those don’t rule out the possibilities, however, that Naughty Dog is just doing some restructuring or that those members had job offers that they couldn’t resist. Halo 4’s principal engine architect joined the team, and Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley are never bad people to have overseeing the development of a game. Plus, it has been in development for nearly 3 years now.

uncharted 4

Strange things are happening at Naughty Dog right now. Shortly after the launch of the newest console from PlayStation and the reveal of the newest instalment in the Uncharted series, a few key members of the team left for other projects. This doesn’t stop us from expecting a lot from the upcoming Uncharted PS4. We expect everything we’ve come to know about an Uncharted game, such as its great story, fantastic presentation and fun gameplay, along with more innovation in the series. We also hope to see a full reveal at Sony’s E3 press conference in June as well, but we’ll just have to wait and see for that.
