Cyanide Studio’s upcoming video game adaptation of the pen-and-paper RPG Werewolf: The Apocalypse will offer players many different ways to play.

Speaking to GameWatcher at E3 2017, the project’s designer Julien Desourteaux revealed the moment-to-moment gameplay of Werewolf: The Apocalypse will be reliant on choices made by the player, with a particular focus on the balance between rage and self-control. To facilitate this mechanic, the game includes a Rage meter “that has to be maintained by the player because if the Garou’s rage gets out of control, they will frenzy.” Entering into a frenzy provides a massive boost to the character’s strength, but also lasts until all NPCs in the vicinity are dead, meaning that allies and important characters can be killed in such situations.

Furthermore, and in order to provide more reason to engage stealth and dialogue options, the developers are designing the game so that violent players will face more dangerous foes as the game goes on. Despite imbuing the gameplay with choice, however, Cyanide Studio is taking a linear approach to the story. Regardless of the player’s actions, the narrative will always play out the same way. That narrative will approach contemporary themes of human activity’s impact on the environment, with the main antagonist being the Pentex Corporation, a company “that represents a ton of industries that harvest various natural areas for human progress.”

Throughout the game, players will be able to move between various different forms that are best suited to particular purposes. Desourteaux specifically mentions the combat-based Garou form, and the exploration-focused wolf form, which can be changed on-the-fly as the in-game situation requires, and also suggests that at least one other form will be included in the final game.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse is set in the World of Darkness universe, which also incorporates the Vampire: The Masquerade games, though is unlikely to feature any callbacks to those earlier titles.

The game was announced earlier this year and is slated for release on PC and consoles, though a launch date has not yet been revealed.
