Wow. It has been quite a long time since we’ve done a Week in Review here on OnlySP. It was my duty last year and it kinda fell off the radar when I got busy with finals in the winter and then I never picked it back up so I apologize for that. But, it’s back and you can expect there to be giveaways to accompany the post each Sunday as often as we can.
If you’ve never been to a Week in Review here on OnlySP, we essentially recap the latest development here on OnlySP, talk about some of the week’s biggest topics and talk about some personal gaming.
To start things off this week we just had a relatively long meeting with our staff about the current state of the site and our content coverage plans for the months ahead. Over the past half a year or so we’ve had some really good months in terms of traffic, and some months where we’re doing just OK in terms of traffic. We want to make sure that while we’re slowly growing as a site, that we also have consistent traffic numbers.
For example, in February and March, we were on the verge of hitting 200,000 visits a month, but after that, our traffic numbers went back to our normal levels of around 100-150,000 a month. This was in part due to a lack of things to cover, but we also just went through some big staff changes with members leaving and new member joining. It seems to me that every time we have a big traffic jump, we tend to lose writers shortly after. I’ve brought this up with the team so hopefully we can keep that from happening in the future when we have traffic bumps again.
In our meeting, we also discussed that the focus of the site has shifted a bit and we’re looking to fix that now. In the past, we had done a better job of finding stories that you wouldn’t find on other sites, and that just has not been the case recently. When it has, it usually yields good results for us, obviously. Part of this was due to the lack of time I’ve had over the past couple months with finishing up classes, as well as not having very many news writers on staff to help me dig for stories. Both of these factors have been fixed, and you will see OnlySP finding more stories that other sites haven’t already covered on a more regular basis as our writers continue to learn to investigate and dig sources up for stories.
Our editorial content is also going to go through a bit of re-haul as we look to focus more on talking about recent games and exploring them more in-depth. We’ll still post essay-like editorials about relevant topics, but you’ll see more topics about the games we’re currently playing than the topics we’ve been focusing on lately.
New feature video content is also in the works that should be ready in the next few weeks or so. We’re pretty excited about the ideas we’ve come up with and we think you’ll enjoy them as well. Stay tuned for more updates on those videos, as we’ve promised new content in the past and failed to deliver so we’re going to do our best to make sure we follow through this time.
There’s a lot of stuff in the works behind the scenes here and if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please let me know in the comments section so myself or Reid can remedy whatever issues you may have. Our readers are our number one priority, and if you’re not enjoying the content we’re putting out, let us know about it. Or, you know, if you want to compliment us on our hard work that’s cool too!
This Summer I’ve made a goal for myself to get through as much of my backlog as possible. Right now that list includes games like Fallout 4, Dying Light: The Following, Mad Max and a few other games. I’ve been working on Fallout 4 for the past week or so after I completed Uncharted 4. If you haven’t read my review for the game yet, you should go do that ’cause I absolutely adored Nathan Drake’s final adventure. We recently got review code for DOOM as well so I’m currently playing through that. You might be surprised to hear that it’s the first DOOM I’ve ever played.
Even though I’m working on a few games though, I’m also relatively busy with the summer classes I signed up for. I’m in a feature writing class so I’ve pitched a story to my professor to write up a feature on game development here in the Midwest, so I’m hoping he likes the pitch and lets me go ahead and tackle that topic.
On top of all that we’re also starting to plan out our schedule for E3 2016. Joanna, Josh, Alexis, and myself are all attending this year and are planning on providing you with plenty of video interviews alongside our written content. If there’s any games you want us to try and check out while we’re there, be sure to comment with your suggestions.
That’s all for this week, so be sure to tune in next week for another (shorter) Week in Review and please feel free to leave your own personal gaming update in the comments section so we know what all our fans are up to as well. Have a great evening everyone and be sure to tune in to Game of Thrones tonight!
