The reveal trailer for independent developer Raredrop Games’s debut PC and console title Warborn has arrived, promising stylish turn-based mecha combat.
Inspired by 90’s anime, Warborn sees players take control of honking great mecha units and engage in strategic battles across the solar system. The action is turn-based and lets players choose from a variety of different units with unique skills and combat specializations, before being deployed on a tiled map against opposing mecha. Terrain plays a vital role in combat, forcing pilots to make tactical decisions in the heat of battle.
“Warborn is definitely something of a love letter to Japanese mecha and my attempt at trying to channel the inspiration I felt back when I first watched Gundam Wing as a child. I think part of it is also about making something that I want to play and I feel like there’s room in the world for a ‘2D mecha strategy RPG’.” said Raredrop founder and Warborn lead developer, Josh Regan, in an interview with Strategygamer.
Warborn offers a single player campaign as well as an online multiplayer mode, featuring four commander characters, each with a unique play style and custom mecha. The game has 10 standard mecha classes, from which players will be able to assemble their custom strike force. Strike forces will allow players to recruit new pilots and install upgrade modules to augment the skills and stats of their mecha.
