Walking Dead Final Season - Telltale Games Skybound

Fans of Telltale’s The Walking Dead series can breathe a little easier today after Skybound Entertainment announced that development on the stalled project is finally set to resume.

Following weeks of uncertainty, Skybound has given official confirmation that the final season of the award-winning series will be completed. Development is set to be picked up by franchise creator Robert Kirkman’s multimedia entertainment studio Skybound, with the help of former Telltale staffers.

A statement on the Skybound Entertainment website explains that significant legal and logistical hurdles slowed things down initially, but with these out of the way, development is set to resume in full force, effective immediately.

“Thank you for your patience while we worked with Telltale to take control of Telltale’s The Walking Dead. It’s been a ton of work logistically and legally to get us to a place where we’re able to roll up our sleeves and get to the actual work. After Telltale shut its doors, the game was, unfortunately, unable to be worked on and hence the release dates of Episodes Three and Four have been delayed. But, we’re excited to let you know that many of the talented, passionate team members who originally worked on the game are resuming development efforts today!”

Skybound’s statement leaves unclear exactly how many of the original Telltale Games team are back to work on the project. In a recent Reddit AMA, Skybound CEO Ian Howe stated his intent to finish the series exclusively with the help of former Telltale staff members. “The plan is for it to be staffed 100% by former Telltale staff, the only time we’d look elsewhere is if we can’t fill a particular role from former TT people,” he said.

Shortly after today’s announcement, former lead writer and narrative designer at Telltale Games, James Windeler announced he is among those working on the final episodes. Windeler noted on Twitter that thanks to Skybound, he was “back in the old office today to finish out Clementine’s story.”

In today’s statement, Skybound promised that release dates for the final episodes will follow shortly, and warned that while previous seasons of The Walking Dead may be unavailable to purchase for a few days during the transition, things will return to normal quickly. Additionally, users who have already purchased season four will not need to do so again, and future episodes will be available to download immediately from your digital storefront of choice.

The Walking Dead

In late September, the gaming industry was shocked when Telltale Games suffered a sudden and devastating round of layoffs, eventually leading to the company’s closure, and throwing the future of the final season of The Walking Dead into doubt. In the weeks that followed, Telltale released a statement informing concerned gamers that multiple potential partners had expressed interest in helping see the final season through to its end.

Skybound Entertainment was co-founded by Walking Dead franchise creator Robert Kirkman. The company has a major hand in the production of a vast array of multimedia projects, from comics to games, books, television shows, and movies, including AMC’s The Walking Dead, and Overkill’s The Walking Dead.
