Video Game Awards host Geoff Keighley took a moment out of his show tonight to personally disclose the reason behind Hideo Kojima’s absence from the event, despite Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain’s nomination (and now victory) for best Action/Adventure game of the year. He explained that Konami had ordered Kojima not to attend the event and had disallowed him from accepting the award personally. The live audience expressed passionate displeasure toward Konami with this bit of news. The award was instead accepted by Keifer Sutherland, the voice of Venom Snake and Big Boss.

Keighley extended his warmest sympathies to Kojima, who was watching the VGAs from Tokyo at the time, on behalf of all of the gamers watching. This gesture of solidarity will likely be mirrored by gamers all over social media and hopefully it will turn up the heat on Konami to provide some closure on the issue.

Utmost respect, Keighley.
