Following a series of hints and teases over the past two weeks, Ubisoft has finally pulled back the curtain on Far Cry 5.
As previously noted, the game takes place in the fictional Hope County, Montana, where a religious cult, known as the Project at Eden’s Gate, has staged a coup and taken over the region. The cult is led by Joseph, a doomsday fanatic who believes that the government is on the verge of collapse, and whose actions are driven by this opinion.
Players, meanwhile, assume the role of a currently unnamed junior deputy, whose arrival spurs the cult into a violent take-over. The story will follow the deputy’s attempts to overcome the cult by disrupting its plans and engaging a resistance among the county’s general populace. Ubisoft has outlined a handful of the supporting characters, including Pastor Jerome, Mary May, and Nick, all of whom have personal reasons for wanting to fight back.
Although today’s unveiling has focused on the story of the game, Far Cry 5 will also sport a few changes to the core gameplay, including the ability to play through the entire game in co-op. Most notably, players will be able to pilot aircraft and engage in airborne dogfights for the first time in series history. Alongside this is the returning freedom to drive a wide variety of land-based vehicles and boats, and use such vehicles as refuge from animal attacks. Furthermore, players can recruit both human gangs and animals when tackling the game’s missions.
Far Cry 5 is scheduled to release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on February 27, 2018. Development is being led by Ubisoft Montreal, which has helmed each entry since 2008’s Far Cry 2, with additional work being supplied Ubisoft Toronto, Ubisoft Kiev, Ubisoft Shanghai, and Reflections.
