Ubisoft detailed more about the motivation behind Assassin’s Creed Odyssey‘s Discovery mode and Story Creator modes.
Introduced in Assassin’s Creed Origins, Discovery mode allows players to be immersed in the main game without conflict. The mode allows the players to take tours and learn more about the history of Ancient Greece. In the new Story Creator mode, players can craft their own quest lines in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and share them with the community.
Maxime Durand, Content Director at Ubisoft, discussed one of the reasons for including Discovery mode, saying that players have spent hundreds of hours in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, enjoyed the game, and now can come back to the Discovery Tour mode to learn more about the stories behind its main characters, as well as other historical characters they met throughout their adventure.
Durand also commented on how Ubisoft wanted to improve Discovery mode to be more personal, such as the addition of historic guides which will accompany the player from the beginning to end of tours, as well as quizzes for the player to take.
In terms of the Story Creator mode, Ellie Rhodes, Product Manager at Ubisoft, said that the developer wanted to give back to the community and give them a toolset to write stories into the world. For her personally, she exclaimed “I’m really excited to see what the community can actually come up with. I’m excited about the variety of quests that they will make and the stories that they can tell within the world because there is so much potential there.”
Additionally, Rhodes noted that if players do not want to create a story themselves, they can go to the Story Explorer and browse stories by category, such as “most popular,” or go into the game and it will recommend stories to try out. The more the player rates and tags stories, the better the story recommendations become based on the content that the player likes.
Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, also elaborated on both the motivations and feedback on Discovery mode and Story Creator mode. Guillemot said that the response to the inclusion of Discovery mode in Assassin’s Creed Origins was extremely positive, with many teachers calling in saying that they had used it in their classrooms. He noted that Ubisoft wanted to go one step further and add in more interaction, which ties back to Maxime’s statement about making the Discovery mode more personal.
Guillemot also stated that the Story Creator mode added a new dimension for the Assassin’s Creed brand, expanding that “If we could involve the creation of the fans and enrich entire the overall experience, I think we will see things that will be unexpected. We want you to spend as much time as possible to really come with beautiful stories and I’m anxious to see what they will actually create.”
