Its almost the end of the year and plenty of wonderful games have released. 2014 had its ups and downs, but there were still plenty of great characters  old and new  that were introduced to the gaming community. While difficult to narrow down, I have put together the top five characters in video games of 2014 that, in my opinion, shined the brightest.

5. Bigby Wolf

His gruff exterior and straightforward methods make an interesting lead character in Fable Town. Adam Harrington brought to life a character weighed down by his past deeds who is trying to redeem himself by helping the Fables in the mundane world. Regardless of any obstacle, Bigby will do what is necessary to get the job done, even if it means crossing the line.

Bigby is an example of a true character; a ‘Big and Bad’ fable conflicted with the mess that is Fable Town, while trying to do the right thing. I hope that all characters in Telltale Games will follow his example in future series.

4. Ruvik

Brought to life by the amazing actor Jackie Earle Haley, Ruvik is the most troubled individual of 2014. Originally just a little boy with a sister, all of it was taken away by a series of horrible events.

His sorrow led to a broken mind, experimenting with the human brain and thinking of ways to explore the human psyche further. His terror would live on in his pursuit for revenge and for Leslie, thrusting Sebastian and the others in a land of the macabre.

It is through Ruvik that the player witnesses his pain in the form of monsters, such as Laura and the Keeper. The transformation of a simple child to a killing machine, brought a dynamic I haven’t seen before in survival horror, earning Ruvik a place on this list.

3. Pagan Min

Once again, Far Cry presents another villain so interesting that sometimes the player feels the need to root for him. Besides his charming personality or strange twisted charisma, Pagan always has a way of attracting attention to himself.

His cruelty has no boundaries, leading the player to wonder how one man can become so corrupted by power. Even at the end of the game, Pagan throws a wrench in what the protagonist would expect from a classic nemesis, with an ending that seems unexpected.

There are several arguments on who the better antagonist is in the Far Cry series. While I am conflicted on who I think is better, Pagan has his own charms that can’t be matched.

2. Elise De LaSerre

Remember all that controversy with Ubisoft about female assassins? While Elise may have not been the main character of Assassin’s Creed Unity, she was definitely the shining star. Not only was she, in my opinion, one of the most interesting female characters in recent history, but her personality of taking charge and leading Arno around Paris brought a sense of what could be in the future.

The romance of Unity would not be possible without Elise bringing a true depth to her relationship with Arno, which can be described as strained. Even as a Templar, she knew what was wrong and right, bringing a new perspective into the world of Assassin’s Creed.

I don’t believe I am the only one with the sentiment that Elise was one of the more positive notes about the newest instalment, and hope that other female characters will follow her example in other series.

1. Sera

Do you know how difficult it was not including more than one Dragon Age: Inquisition character on this list? From Iron Bull to Cassandra, the newest Dragon Age brought a plethora of characters that fans could love, but Sera was by far the most fun.

With her no nonsense attitude and quirky personality, Sera would steal the show whenever included as a party member, defying thousands of years of expectations of how an Elf should act. How did she become so skilled? By picking up a bow of course.

Too bad Sera only likes women, as I tried many times to flirt with her with my male Inquisitor. I have yet to start my female playthrough, but I think it goes without saying who I will form a romance with.

2014 saw a bevy of problems, but also new memories, and characters for fans to love. I can’t wait to see what 2015 has to offer, with new titles such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and The Division. It was hard to narrow the list down, but I believe these are the characters that outshine the others.
