We here at Only SP love everything about gaming. We also love the many formats of media that games often appear in; be it comic books, novelizations, and especially movies. The quality of video game movies sure can vary a lot of time; some are good, some are bad, and some are just so bad they’re good. With the surprise announcement of an animated Sly Cooper movie today, we decided to take a look at some of the best upcoming video game movies.

Sly Cooper

In a surprise announcement today, Sony and Sucker Punch announced that they’ve given permission for a brand new film which has Sly Cooper the Thief starring in his very first CGI adventure. The director for this film is the same as the TMNT film back in 2007 and after a few months of development with the Rainmaker Entertainment team, a trailer has been released for the film.

While the characters do look slightly off, the game’s director stated that he did notice this so maybe there’s going to be a lot of remodeling involved for the film, which is still not due to be released for at least another two years. It is also possible that the original character’s voices will return for the roles. However, the action and humor in the trailer was spot on with what to expect with the stealth series. It sure looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun.

World Of Warcraft

The world of Azeroth is full of potential for storytelling. Legendary Pictures are set to release a movie based on WoW called “Warcraft” with Duncan Jones set to direct. Jones is famous for the critically acclaimed sci-fi dramas “Moon” and “Source Code” so hopefully he can successfully bridge the gap between filming sci-fi films to filming fantasy films. Warcraft is still in its infancy as filming only began on January 13, 2014. The film is to be released by Universal Pictures on March 11, 2016.

Assassin’s Creed

One of the biggest franchises in the video game world just got a little bigger. An upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie is planned for release next August with Michael Fassbender set to star and produce. Fassbender, who starred in the recent 12 Years A Slave as well as X-Men: First Class and Prometheus, had met with Ubisoft and said that the idea behind “reliving memories” was intriguing. Scott Frank, the screenwriter behind The Wolverine and Minority Report is also involved in helping write the script. There are a lot of unknown details about the setting and what characters will be involved but Ubisoft are very keen to have a film that appeals to its massive fan base.

Splinter Cell

Another one of Ubisoft’s popular franchises, Splinter Cell, which is based on a series by the late Tom Clancy, now has an upcoming movie release. The main star behind this film is none other than Tom Hardy, the muscle-bound Englishman who played Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Hardy has had a lot of experience with action films and it sure looks like he’s a great choice for the role of Third Echelon super spy, Sam Fisher. The scriptwriter for the Splinter Cell film is none other than Eric Singer, the same man who wrote the script for the Golden Globe winning American Hustle. So be sure to expect a plot that full of action and intelligence. There really is a lot of potential behind this film with such big blockbuster talents working on it.

Ratchet and Clank

This film is easily one of the most anticipated movies of this list because unlike most of these films, we have concrete proof of how great the film already looks. Rainmaker Entertainment, already mentioned for the Sly Cooper movie above, is set to make the Ratchet and Clank movie and it already looks perfect, according to the trailer below. The humor is spot on, the graphics are identical to the game and it looks incredibly charming and fun. The Ratchet and Clank movie is being closely supervised by Insomniac Games with an unused script being used to tell the story of the film, which is the origin story of the duo. The film is due out in early 2015.

There’s still a lot more video game films in the making but we want to hear what you can’t wait to see! Have you got a video game film you’re really excited to see? Let us know in the comments below.
