Be careful what you wish for…

As we reported on Christmas Day, an online post by UK retailer GAME indicated that the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot would feature a multiplayer mode.  That particular line from the post was quickly removed and we were left to wonder.  Just a few days later, Karl Stewart, an executive at developer Crystal Dynamics, has confirmed the rumors via Twitter:

Considering the rumor and subsequent confirmation are the first we’ve heard of any multiplayer elements in Tomb Raider, we’re naturally a bit suspicious of the motivation behind its inclusion.  In addition, if it was thrown together in the hasty fashion this news seems to indicate, what kind of quality can we really expect to see?  Our overriding concern here at OnlySP is how the the addition of a multiplayer component is going to affect the single-player campaign.

As the Tweet states, we’ll have to wait for the next issue of Official XBox Magazine to find out more.  We’ll certainly be digging into it at our first opportunity and we’ll let you know if our suspicions are justified.  With just over two month to go before Lara Croft makes her return to the gaming stage on March 5th, we’ve got our fingers crossed that this isn’t the haphazard desperation move it appears to be.

I'm a new dad, gaming machine, and beard aficionado. With a little one in the house, I've come to embrace the single-player experience, as it is much less likely to send me into a profanity-laced, controller-throwing tantrum. Writing and video games are two of my greatest passions, so this is a natural fit for me. As long as it doesn't require me to perform coordinated dance moves in front of my Kinect, i'm willing to pen my thoughts on it. Aside from gaming, I love music (Smashing Pumpkins), coffee (Red-Eye), and sushi (Yellowtail). All offerings of my aforementioned favorites will be accepted with open arms and, if you're lucky, i'll let you touch my beard. Just don't pull on it. That hurts.

  1. (Mass Effect 3) (Dead Island) (Call of Duty) before that modern warfare shit. (Dead Space) multiplayer is a virus….. And its spreading rapidly. Thank goodness for Epic Games, Rock Star, Bethesda, Thq, and ubisoft. I wasn’t going to buy this piece of crap anyway. Know back to Far Cry 3.

    1. I was actually looking forward to this reboot, but this news makes me a bit wary. I&#039m just hoping I can ignore the multiplayer without having to look at it as a detriment to the quality of the campaign.

Also, if you consider multiplayer to actually be a rapidly spreading virus, then you&#039ve found a website that shares your sentiments – at least to some extent. Hope you enjoy it!

      1. The multiplayer is being handled externally at Eidos Montreal, which should mean that the single player campaign is in no way affected by it.
