I don’t think words exist to describe how excited I am for the now-revealed Thief reboot, though if they do, they’re probably not appropriate for this article.

Anyhow, the images from the upcoming Game Informer story have just been leaked by a European social network site, GamesManiac. They include not just concept and promotional art, but also full-on screenshots that look to be completely rendered in the game’s next-gen engine. Check them out below!

Lockpicking is back, as a screenshots so prominently displays, and so are steampunk-esque deploy-able cameras judging by one of the screenshots being viewed from a distorted first-person perspective. Garrett, who has gotten a neat re-design, can also seemingly peak around corners and vault objects with more interaction from his hands this time. The graphics really are drool-worthy.

It’s astounding just how much it looks like a Thief game, too. The pseudo-Victorian meets steampunk style has come roaring back, and little touches like the guard’s minimalistic and realistic armor design, as well as that of the desk and chair in one image, harken back to the aesthetic of the previous titles in the series.

You’ll notice that the game looks eerily similar in way to the recently released stealth game Dishonored, and even though the original Thief games came first and were a huge source of inspiration for Bethesda and Arkane’s title, some of the visual cues, like the gigantic clock tower and the party scene that’s doused in the colors red and orange, really do look they were in fact inspired from Dishonored. Hey, considering that game had excellent atmosphere as well, I don’t think this is a problem. Dishonored took some aesthetic touches from Thief, and now it’s returning the favor.

Let us know what you think, and stay tuned for MUCH more coverage on this fourth entry, which is just called Thief due to being a reboot. It’s set to release in 2014 for PC, PS4 and likely the next Xbox.

  1. it have better be amazing times have changed we have games like dishonored that involves super powers while heavy relying on stealth in first person at the same time. Thief have better bring it’s A game when it comes back into the fray or the newer generation will write if off as another pretender (even tho it came out wayyyy before any of theses games were thought of) Please hav a breath taking story….

    1. I definitely agree on the story part. That’s an area where Thief has a huge advantage over Dishonored, and Eidos should really focus on fleshing that out.

As for the rest of the game, I remain confident despite the rumored “focus” mechanic. I have no doubt the folks at Eidos are passionate and dedicated about the gameplay here, and Thief and Dishonored are two different beasts anyway. Whereas Dishonored was based around assassinations, Thief is all about pulling off elaborate heists.

Basically, I don’t think Dishonored has really stolen any of Thief’s thunder. I’m just happy we’ll be getting more awesome stealth games. :D
