The Witcher author has agreed to continue CD Projekt Red exclusive rights for video games, graphic novels, board games, and merchandise.
Andrzej Sapkowski, the author of The Witcher, had previously signed over the rights to all his novels for an upfront fee. He opted not to receive any potential royalties because he believed the games would not attract interest. However, he soon regretted that decision stating:
It was stupid. I was stupid enough to leave everything in their hands because I didn’t believe in their success. But who could foresee their success? I couldn’t.”
This new agreement brings closure to the public dispute between the game developer and the author. In addition, CD Projekt’s president and joint CEO Adam Kiciński said, “I believe today marks a new stage in our continued relationship.”
The studio is currently working on Cyberpunk 2077, but has indicated that it has plans to return to The Witcher universe in the future too.
