Lords of the Fallen developer Deck 13 has released a new, four minute long gameplay trailer of its upcoming title The Surge, displaying various combat mechanics and enemy encounters.

The footage (embedded below) shows gameplay reminiscent of the Dark Souls series, exhibiting enemy lock-on and blindsiding back stabs. Also featured are the game’s QTE-like finishing moves that allow players to select specific limbs and strategically execute a customized style of attack.

The player’s heads-up display contains bars monitoring health and endurance, ensuring awareness of the character’s stamina, and movement and attack options.

A notable difference between The Surge, and Deck 13’s previous title is apparent in character movement: dodging enemy attacks seems much more fluid. The trailer shows the player making use of large dashing strafes to get the jump on enemies or avoid oncoming attacks. These quick sideways moves might be compared to Nioh’s or Bloodborne‘s use of similar mechanics. Furthermore, the way the character slides along the ground seems ripped directly from Platinum Games’s Vanquish, where it was used to thrilling effect.

Enemies shown in the trailer range from humanoid cyborgs to pouncing predatory robots. At one point, the main character battles a robot possessing the ability to change its shape, while another encounter sees the player engage  a scorpion-like machine before finally stumbling upon a nightmarish yellow tank dripping glowing lava. Like the player, enemies wield a broad arsenal, from glowing Tesla-like melee weaponry, to a wide range of different lasers

Deck 13 is clearly taking advantage of The Surge’s far-future setting with its imaginative use of technology, which, in concert with its strong-looking gameplay, should be enough for fans of the team’s previous games to be waiting in eager anticipation.

More information about the story and setting of the game was released alongside its initial announcement, while the developers previously provided fourteen minutes of gameplay at Gamescom earlier this year.

The Surge is slated to arrive on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2017.
