The Order: 1886 has achieved a cult following since its mixed release, which has inspired developer Ready At Dawn to discuss the possibility of a sequel.
Speaking to Polygon, the game’s director, Ru Weerasuriya, commented on everything from the game’s development to its much-criticised brevity. In a revealing response, Weerasuriya opened up the possibility of continuing the series:
“[F]or us to go back to bigger budget and make something on console, yeah, it’s in our DNA. We will always kind of have that balance. I think the studio is never stuck on one thing.”
Weerasuriya made repeated references earlier in the interview regarding how The Order: 1886 was developed with a series in mind:
“Even before the release of the game, [the studio] put a lot of work on the foundations of why each of these characters are who they are, where they came from, what is behind the story. Not The Order: 1886, but what’s behind the story.”
With the hype and production budget surrounding the release, The Order: 1886 was set to be a long-term investment for Sony. The game was the first showcase of the PlayStation 4’s visual potential, but following the game’s lukewarm reception, Sony abandoned the IP.
With Ready At Dawn having a creative three years, the studio seems to be itching to return to its roots. For more on the title and the world of single-player, be sure to follow OnlySP on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
