Action-platformers are a dime-a-dozen these days, but Team17’s Blasphemous stands out with its bloody, visceral debut trailer.

The game’s two-minute trailer treads the line between a love letter to Castlevania and a 2D replication of a bloodier Dark Souls. The game is drenched in Gothic atmosphere, from its ruined castles to its mask-wearing protagonist. Some of the bosses in the trailer alone, too, just look straight up wild:

A Metroidvania at heart, the developer, The Game Kitchen, has promised “a huge universe comprised of non-linear levels.” Previously, the developer strictly dealt with 8-bit aesthetics but has taken a slight step up with the game’s pixelated, SNES-inspired art direction.

While the continual organ-inspired drone of the trailer’s music may paint Blasphemous as a depressing affair, its gameplay is somewhat of an inverse of its aesthetics. Combat looks weighty and response, with the game’s bloody design being the icing on the cake.

Blasphemous has no release date as of writing and will be releasing on PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One. For more from the world of single-player gaming, be sure to follow OnlySP on FacebookTwitter, and YouTube. Also, be sure to join the discussion in the community Discord server.
