It’s been several weeks since Ubisoft dropped us into the heart of darkness with their latest installment in the Far Cry series. Since then, we’ve hacked through the jungle paradise, taking on all manner of wildlife and pirate scum. However, it’s becoming quite clear that arguably the game’s only downfall, re-playability, is starting to rear its ugly head. Forums across the web are flooding with ideas for possible modifications and addons to spice up the Rook Islands. A dinosaur, or more specifically Jurassic Park, mod is currently the talk of the town. I have to say I’m fully on board for this. Velociraptors would be a terrifying addition to the jungle’s already intimidating fauna. But let me take you on a different ride…
Imagine, you’re trekking through dense vegetation when all of a sudden your HUD becomes obscured by dripping blood. Glancing upward in an effort to locate the source, you spy a corpse decapitated and skinless strung from the canopy. Curious, you take aim at the ropes keeping the body suspended to shoot it down. Just as you’re about to pull the trigger, three little red dots appear on your forearm, forming a faint triangle. Thinking you’ve wandered into a sniper’s trap, you whip around in an effort to lose line of sight on the sharpshooter only to see the jungle come alive. An invisibility cloak shimmers and fades, and you stand face to face with the Predator.
While the occasional bear or tiger still roams the jungle long after you’ve captured the last pirate outpost, there’s an absence of danger to the island that I feel dinosaurs could not properly revive. They are, after all, still just animals. But the Predator of film fame would bring that element that you are never safe. It constantly hunts you. You are it’s only mission.
The first encounter with the extra-terrestrial hunter could be semi-scripted with the player just barely escaping as they did in the game’s opening sequence. The player would fall into a mud pit just as Predator readies it’s plasma cannon. Just as Schwarzenegger survived in the first film, the mud from the many river banks dotting the Rook Islands could provide the player with an active camouflage against the Predator’s thermal vision. For balance, the mud camo would be on a timer just like the many syringes available.
Killing the monster would be an excruciatingly difficult task with possibly many scripted events and missions leading to the final showdown. Spiked pit traps and dead falls could be added to the crafting menu, and the player could easily harvest the wood from any tree on the island. The AI for this great opponent would need to be ramped up considerably however. During my playthrough, I never once encountered an enemy that I felt couldn’t be outsmarted by a four year old at the controller. Once the Predator goes down, his blood could be harvested to craft a syringe that would allow the user to partially see camouflaged enemies. This would become invaluable as the island becomes riddled with multiple Predators; ready to avenge their fallen brother.
“Have I ever told you the definition of murder?”
Far Cry 3’s environment is the perfect breeding ground for ideas. It’s vast, open world leaves little to restrict the imagination and it’s evident that there is no shortage of content to bring to the South Pacific paradise. A Predator mod is simply my take on a creative way to keep players on their toes long after they’ve brought down Hoyt’s empire. What do you think? What else could be included in this package? Or do you have any ideas of your own? Let us know!
