Telling Lies developer Sam Barlow has spoken about the inspiration behind the game’s narrative and gameplay.

During an interview with Twitch at E3, Barlow referred to Telling Lies as an “open world video” game, referring to the task of openly exploring the video conversations.

Barlow added that he was inspired by the open world of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, though on a different scale. He appreciated that Breath of the Wild allowed players to move in any direction; if they saw something interesting in the difference, they could travel and arrive at a location handcrafted by the developer.

Barlow wanted to take this concept and transfer it to Telling Lies. He considers the videos themselves to be the “level design” and wants to make them rich and colourful in concept.

In the game, the player is tasked with an investigation using video conversations from a hard drive stolen from the National Security Agency (NSA). The conversations are between four different characters, though the player only witnesses one at a time and must search for any others. By analysing words and phrases from the clips, the player is able to piece together other sides of the conversation. The story takes place across three years, so the player witnesses the characters’ lives change over time.

The game starts the player at the point in which the key phrase or word is mentioned; the player must then scrub the video backwards or forward to discover any more relevant information.

Barlow described the game as “stupidly ambitious” in comparison to his previous game Her Story, noting that Telling Lies has a “whole ton of content.”

The game is nearing the end of development. Barlow expects the game to launch “very, very soon,” and hopes to announce a release date shortly.

While Telling Lies is confirmed to release on iOS and PC, Barlow notes that not every platform has been announced yet; he wants the game to come to more platforms as well.

Barlow and Annapurna Interactive revealed a new trailer for the game during the PC Gaming Show earlier today.
