Tales of Arise

More details about the art direction of Tales of Arise have emerged.

In an interview with Japanese video game magazine Famitsu, Tales of Arise producer Yuusuke Tomizawa elaborated on the game’s art style.

Tomizawa noted that the main character designer and head of art direction is Minoru Iwamot of Bandai Namco Studios. He also explained that Arise is the first mothership title in the Tales series where the main character designer and head of art direction is the same person. As a result, the game’s art has a more unified sense of direction.

He said that in regards to the character’s facial animations and camera work, the team is aiming for a level of 3D anime comparable to television and theater. Tomizawa also mentioned that 2D anime is an important element of the Tales series, and how it plays a big part in the balance between succession and evolution with the upgrade to 3D anime.

Additionally, the previous dedicated engine that had been used for the Tales series has been done away with for Tales of Arise. The team is utilizing Unreal Engine 4 and developing its own completely original shaders. Alongside that, the team wants to achieve rich lighting and atmosphere as well as unique watercolor graphics and approachable character models.

Tales of Arise was leaked ahead of E3 2019 and officially revealed during Microsoft’s E3 2019 Xbox Briefing. The game is set to release in 2020.
