System Shock 3

Veteran designer Warren Spector has hinted that the long-awaited System Shock 3 will have some big surprises in store.

Speaking to GameSpot recently, Spector teased “that we have two things that I think are really going to set the game apart.”

While he refused to be drawn on specifics, as the development process may alter the way these mechanics work at present, Spector confirmed that they are not necessarily new concepts but ones that the team at OtherSide Entertainment are taking “much further and in some interesting directions.”

He went on to downplay the idea that these novelties would be related to the first-person combat, instead hinting that they have to do with the philosophy of “playstyle matters.”

Particularly, he discussed level design, whereby verticality has become far more commonplace than when the first System Shock launched in 1994. The development team is taking account of that and other updated principles, such as the use of “corners and hiding spots” from where players can plan the best approach to a new challenge.
