This exclusive sounds like a lot of fun.

So, the first big pre-E3 reveal has finally happened and we are excited to share all the new details with you on Sunset Overdrive so let’s get started.

The game is set in the near future in a location called Sunset City: a huge metropolis brimming with color and exotic locations like Sex Burger which you read all about here on Insomniac’s website. The game is set during a city-wide party which was set up to celebrate the launch of a new energy drink from FizzCo called OverCharge Delirium XT. Things go haywire with the drink and turn everyone who drinks it into what Insomniac calls the OD: Overcharged Drinkers. From here on out your goal is to escape the city in any way you can. Along your journey you’ll pummel your way through tons of different enemies and “bizarre” bosses, according to Polygon. Polygon describes one of these enemies as a “part human, part leafblower creature” if that gives you any indication of what to expect from the game.

The game is completely open world and consists of a network of different islands. In many previews, the writer compares the game to Crackdown with its sense of verticality. Player movement is a big focus for Insomniac with Sunset Overdrive as players will be able to wall run, mantle and grind across cables set up across each island. As you can see from the screenshots, the world is chock full of color with varied enemies and environments. None of the previews I read had anything negative to say about the world, and, according to most of the previews, the world is gigantic.

As you’d also expect, the weapon loadout sounds quite intensive with previewers mentioning weapons like a teddy bear grenade launcher, Roman candle launcher, flame throwing shotguns and plenty more. In addition, there will be no cover system in the game as Insomniac wants the action to be frenzied and crazy with players attacking the monsters of the city head-on. You’ll even be rewarded for doing so.

This is where the Style Meter comes into play. Basically, the way that this works is you’ll be rewarded for doing stylish things. As IGN explains it, “Grind along from rail to rail and never touch the ground and the meter will go up. Throw a few headshots in there, and some devastating explosions taking out a slew of OD’d, and it will go up even more.”

An article on Xbox Wire details the customization that will be available to players in the game which includes stat buffing, weapon creations and more. According to the Wire, not only can you precisely tailor your character from a huge number of body parts and clothing pieces, but an Amps system lets you craft weapons and other tools to help you along the way. Recipes scattered around Sunset City require cans of Overcharge to be combined with other items to craft Amps  weapons each have Amp slots which serve to upgrade them with powers that go well beyond simple stat buffs (though you get those, too).

According to Ted Price and one of the producers on the game, Bryan Intihar, this is the game they’ve, “been meaning to make for 20 years”. Price states, “This is Insomniac being Insomniac. This is the kind of game that we’ve all dreamed of developing for a long time.”

Currently, the game runs at sub-1080p, but in all honesty, who cares. Everything about the game sounds fun, and if you’re looking for a unique and exciting new IP on the Xbox One, you should certainly keep Insomniac’s latest game on your radar.
