Originally known as True Crime: Hong Kong, Sleeping Dogs is the next game from United Front Games, the studio behind Sony’s answer to Mario Kart, Modnation Racers. Although it was dropped by Activision due to a perceived lack of massive sales potential, Square-Enix came to the rescue, picking it up and rebranding it. It still follows the original plot of a Hong Kong police detective infiltrating the Triads in an attempt to bring down one of their factions, the Sun On Yee, while we’ve also since heard that it will feature one of the best, most in-depth melee combat systems ever portrayed in a game.
You can see glimpses of this in the trailer below, which is designed to show off some of the elements of the story and does so with voice acting that is simply sublime and a look and feel that is very reminiscent of the Hong Kong that is so familiar from films and novels set in the region. The game is set for a vague 2012 date, though some sources have it pegged for a release in August.
