MidKnight Story is the latest remarkably promising RPG set to be brought to life thanks to support from fans.
The game recently surpassed its initial EUR€45,000 funding target on Kickstarter and is quickly seeing its stretch goals fall. At the time of writing, the project had raised more than €48,000, resulting in new outfits for the protagonist and added exploration options.
MidKnight Story is primarily the work of a single developer, Mattia Ciurlino, who first started modelling assets for the project three years ago. Since then, the title has developed into a sprawling RPG with a fully explorable open world, incorporating all the bells and whistles players might expect: swimming, dynamic day/night cycles, loot, and a wide array of skills.
While details on the story are scant, the game will follow a young man named Paran who one day discovers a transforming sword, which begins a quest to discover the secrets of the world. A short gameplay video from the project is embedded below.
Although the game design has been handled by Ciurlino, he is outsourcing the audio production, and Nier: Automata vocalist Emi Evans will contribute to the soundtrack. The page also reveals that the crowdfunding is intended to allow Ciurlino to “be able to hire even more talented artists to help bring the world alive in the absolute best way possible.”
At present, the game is only planned to arrive on PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, though a PlayStation 4 release is promised if the title manages to reach the €56,000 mark before crowdfunding ends on May 24. Before that, though, an extra dungeon will be unlocked at €51,000.
MidKnight Story is currently slated to arrive in September 2021.
