Of all the games on Sony’s slate, The Last Guardian seems to be perpetually among the most talked-about, even though it is one shrouded in mystery. Originally teased in 2007, the latest from Team ICO was announced in 2009 and scheduled for a 2011 release, but has since disappeared. Sony has continually reiterated that it is constantly in development, though many felt the stepping back of Fumito Ueda, the creative director of the game, to the role of external consultant may have been a death knell.
The most recent hint about the title comes from a GameInformer interview with Shuhei Yoshida, President of SCE Worldwide Studios, where he was asked whether it was time for fans to give up hope, in light of the imminent launch of the PS4. His response was brief:
The team is still there in SCE Japan Studio, [Fumito] Ueda-san is still there, but we are still waiting for the time to reintroduce it.
It’s a nebulous statement that should not get anyone excited, but it is still nice to know that it is still being worked on. It has to be, right? If it wasn’t, Sony would say that it was cancelled or “on hold”, as they did with The Getaway 3 and Eight Days, right?
