This one’s sure to cause a stir in the gaming community. Sony has just filed a patent that, once in place, would allow them to implement technology that would render second-hand games unusable on their future consoles.

The full patent can be seen here. It’s pretty lengthy and dense, but the gist of it, so far as I can understand, is that Sony can utilize an ‘ID tag’ system embedded within brand new games that, when used with a specific console, more or less ‘binds’ them to the system. The ‘tags’ are unique and are programmed in such a way so that they can only be used once. Basically, once you start playing a game on your console, that game cannot be played on any other person’s console from that point on.

This patent will take about two-three years to fully go through its processes, meaning that they could very well implement such a feature for the PS4, or whatever their next console will be called. Heck, I don’t even think they need to the patent to start putting this in place; the patent’s probably just to make sure nobody rips off this idea. I apologize, I’m no legal wizard.

How do you feel about this, single-players? Let us know, and stay tuned for more info on the PS4 and its features, as dubious as some of them may be.

    1. My thoughts exactly.

  1. This is the beginning of the SOP system.

  2. I can&#039t wait until Sony also introduces a restriction wherein you have to scan the barcode on your game&#039s box, insert your original receipt for the game in the disc slot, AND sign an agreement form with your own blood each time before playing. Bonus points for only being able to play on a Sony TV.

  5. This kind of feature would destroy Sony. If they implement this, they are done.

    1. yeah I agree with newdarkcould. If Sony actually goes through with something like this, a lot of core gamers will turn away. That said, the PS4 could also not cater to core gamers at all… only time will tell.
