The first Sonic Forces gameplay trailer is here, and Sonic is looking faster than ever.

On March 17, 2017, Sega released the first gameplay trailer for Sonic Forces. In the video, Sonic the Hedgehog races through a besieged city, picking up gold rings (a consistent theme in the Sonic franchise) and barrelling into enemies as he jumps through the air. Like many recent entries in the franchise, the game runs in a 3D model and features power boosts that increase Sonic’s speed. Sonic is also shown to utilize a zipline to navigate some of the map.

Sonic Forces will be released for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It is being developed by the Sonic Team and published by Sega. No official release date has been announced outside of late 2017. The gameplay trailer can be seen below.

Along with the South by Southwest event’s reveal that Project Sonic 2017 is now Sonic Forces, it was announced that Sega’s other Sonic the Hedgehog project, titled Sonic Mania, has been delayed until later in 2017. The delay is to give the developers, Headcannon and PagodaWest Games, more time to polish the game’s features. Unlike Sonic ForcesSonic Mania will be a side-scrolling platformer, similar to Sonic the Hedgehog titles developed for the Sega Genesis and its add-ons.

The first games in the series were side-scrolling platform games, but the franchise has developed into other genres over the years. Sonic Boom is one such titles. The series features various characters that aid Sonic and others who act as his nemeses. These characters (Amy, Knuckles, Dr. Ivo Eggman Robotnik, etc.) have returned in most, if not all, of Sonic’s adventures.
