Ys Net is doubling down on the slow, meditative pacing of the Shenmue series in the latest entry if recent comments are any indication.

During a recent hands-on preview, IGN had the chance to talk about the game with director Yu Suzuki and co-producer Cedric Biscay, leading to some intriguing revelations.

According to Biscay, one of the things set to separate Shenmue III from the competition is that “Shenmue is all about depth and poetry, something we find less and less in current large productions.”

The statement is more than an idle boast. In addition to the return of mundane tasks and jobs, the game will feature an affinity system that determines how characters react to the protagonist Ryo Hazuki.

Another leading goal “is linking different features together,” according to Suzuki. A realistic economy system seems to be at the centre of this endeavour, although a dynamic, real-time weather system will also reportedly have measurable effects on the gameplay experience.

The full interview goes into much more detail about other features, ranging from the combat system to character customisation, as well as analysing the play experience.

Shenmue III has already suffered two delays since its amazingly successful Kickstarter campaign in 2015. However, the game is scheduled to launch on August 27, 2019 on PC and PlayStation 4.

The development team recently offered a quick glimpse of Shenmue III‘s gameplay.
