Kickstarter backers of Shenmue 3 will receive a refund if they requested the Steam version of the game because Ys Net and Deep Silver have signed an exclusivity deal with the Epic Games Store.
Details on whether Kickstarter backers would be able to claim a refund were previously uncertain, but now Ys Net has confirmed that refunds will be available; however individual circumstances may apply.
At the time of launch, PC players will only receive the Epic Games Store keys. Ys Net will give players the choice to either switch to the PlayStation 4 version or wait for the timed exclusivity period to expire. However, Ys Net, Deep Silver, and Epic have agreed that refund requests will be honoured for PC backers but have asked for patience, and are set to release further details of their refund policy.
“Details concerning the refund request process will be announced in a following update. We ask for your patience until that time.”
“In response to backers who have requested Steam keys for their rewards, we discussed offering the keys on the day of release,” Ys Net said in an update on Shenmue 3’s Kickstarter page.
“That we are not able to offer Steam keys for Kickstarter rewards at the time of the game’s release is a great disappointed [sic] and inconvenience for those backers who were expecting to receive them. We deeply apologize for the unrest caused by the announcement.”
Developer Ys Net and publisher Deep Silver confirmed that Shenmue 3 will now be a timed exclusive on the Epic Games Store. The announcement comes long after a Kickstarter campaign raised money, and promised availability on Steam.
This is certainly not the first time Epic Games Store has caused controversy over its use of exclusives. Epic has received criticism regarding gaining an unfair share over the PC distribution market. This has proved divisive among gamers and within the games industry. Therefore, opinion is divided whether Epic’s exclusivity model is a force for good or bad.
