The first part of Ebb Software’s atmospheric horror title Scorn has met its initial Kickstarter goal as of September 29, 2017.

After a rough start and failed crowdfunding campaign in 2014, the Scorn project received outside funding, allowing it to return for a second Kickstarter attempt two years later. This second try proved to be the charm, and Scorn reached its goal, raising €150,000 with 10 days left in its campaign. While additional stretch goals remain as the proverbial icing on the cake, the Scorn team now has the resources to deliver the surreal, nightmarish experience envisioned from the beginning.

Scorn features a cohesive, immersive gameworld filled with maze-like structures inhabited by strange, twisted creatures. With artwork reminiscent of the late artists H. R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński, the game combines the mechanical and organic to create a living environment for players to explore. Interaction with the game world is immersive and realistic, as objects are picked up by the protagonist’s hands, machines and instruments must be manipulated to operate, and all actions take time to execute.

In addition, Scorn emphasizes environmental storytelling, with no cutscenes to distract players from the world they travel through. The creatures living within that world each have distinct personalities, and may display curiosity, hostility, neutrality, or other reactions to player presence, as well as reacting and adapting to the actions of the protagonist and changes brought to their environment. Both fighting and stealth actions are encouraged, and with limited inventory and ammunition, players will need to utilize different playstyles to advance through the game.

OnlySP previously featured Scorn in the latest Indie Highlight Reel, offering a little insight on the mindset of lead developer Ljubomir Peklar. Now that Scorn’s Kickstarter goal has been reached, look for the game to be released for PC on an as-of-yet unspecified date in 2018.
