Microsoft may have very special plans for a yet-unknown charterer in their Gears of War franchise, if their latest exploits in trademarking are any indication.
They recently went ahead and trademarked the name “Marlow Briggs” via a TEAS Plus application, which was filed under the identification category of “game software.” Below is a general summary of the trademark, provided by Neogaf user “Rosti.”

We couldn’t help but notice on the Gears of War wiki that the deceased members of the team Echo-Ten included a member by the name of Jordan Briggs. He obviously shares the same surname as this mysterious Marlow fellow, so perhaps Marlow is his sibling? The name Marlow is unisex, so we have no idea whether this unannounced character is male or female, and given that both genders are quite prominent in the world of the series as of Gears of War 3, anything’s possible.
The thing is, if Microsoft went to all this trouble to secure a trademark for just one character, then clearly they think he/she is important and they have some rather big plans for them. The easiest way to speculate would be to say that Marlow will star in a spinoff, but who knows? Maybe they will factor into promotion and marketing for the upcoming Gears of War: Judgement somehow.
Stay tuned for more news on the Gears of War franchise and any future appearances of Marlow Briggs, whoever he/she is.
