Divinity: Original Sin II, the latest entry in Larian Studios’s long-running Divinity series, is scheduled for a PC release on September 14.
The game follows closely in the footsteps of its predecessor, 2014’s Divinity: Original Sin, by revisiting and revamping the settings and gameplay mechanics of the earlier title. One of the biggest differences between the two projects lays in the scale, with this sequel featuring much larger environments, more in-depth gameplay, and a more far-reaching story.
Taking place a thousand years on from the first game, players take the role of a magician and are tasked with choosing the next god of the game’s world of Rivellon. To do so, players will be able to create a custom character, chosen from one of five races and a backstory that will inform their skills, in a game that promises almost unparalleled freedom. Unlike most RPGs, Divinity: Original Sin II does not impose hard limits on the NPCs that players can either talk to or kill.
Combat in the game is turn-based, though the range of abilities to choose from and the freedom to combine spells adds a distinct edge to the experience.
To celebrate today’s announcement, the developers have updated the game’s Steam Early Access build, adding in two new areas, a companion relationship system, and upgrading the character creation mechanics. Divinity: Original Sin II entered Early Access on September 15, 2016, meaning that the game will have been in the program for a year on its release.
