Have you ever thought to yourself how cool it would be to play a Grand Theft Auto title set in the future? Cars flying in a multi-level city resembling Coruscant, laser rifle blasts flying left and right as you swerve through lanes of air traffic trying to outrun police speeders. Believe it or not, Rockstar Games is interested in one day exploring such a possibility, provided they have a good enough reason to.

Rockstar Games’ Dan Houser recently spoke to French publication Ecrans, stating that the developer definitely finds something appealing about such a premise. However, he also smartly stated that in order for such an idea to work, it would have to serve a relevant and meaningful story. The following is a translated piece of the interview, provided by OXM.

We will do it the very second we have an idea… One of our strengths is the consistency of the game world. We’re not necessarily the best writers in the world, but we how to write a video game… When we decided to make a Western, it was because we knew we had something to say… We have no interest in going into science fiction for the sake of flying cars and laser guns. The best science fiction stories are those that speak about the human condition. So while this idea is very tempting and, by definition, anything’s possible in a videogame, we lack the essential thing for the moment: a good reason.

This in no way confirms such a project is in production, but it does indicate that Rockstar are willing to take some risks with the franchise if it ever grows stale. A GTA title set in the future would almost certainly be larger in scope then the already massive worlds of modern titles in the series, so perhaps such a game would be best-suited to next-gen consoles, where the jump in technology would give Rockstar some more breathing room for development and allow for bigger worlds, faster vehicles and the like.

Ultimately, Houser seems to think that a sci-fi GTA just for the hell of it would be silly and pointless. Do you agree? Even if you do, what would you like to see in a futuristic GTA if it were to be made? Let us know, and stay tuned for more news regarding any of Rockstar’s upcoming projects?

  1. I’ve been hoping Rock Star would do something like that at some point. To be honest, the whole modern day urban crime drama thing is getting old. But, i’d like to see something more akin to Syndicate Wars or Blade Runner rather than Star Wars.
