In an effort to ensure a quality product upon delivery, Rockstar Games has pushed Red Dead Redemption 2’s release back to spring 2018.

The announcement was made in the newswire section of Rockstar Games’s website, explaining the reason for the delay and apologizing for any disappointment the delay causes, stating, “We are very sorry for any disappointment this delay causes, but we are firm believers in delivering a game only when it is ready.”

In addition to the announcement, Rockstar Games provided some brand-new screenshots of the upcoming open-world Western. A couple of the screenshots can be viewed below, while the rest can be seen on Rockstar’s website mentioned above.

Rockstar claims the delay is due to the video game developer wanting to ensure a quality product. However, speculation also wonders whether or not the game’s competition with Ubisoft’s upcoming Far Cry 5—rumored to be based in the West, specifically in Montana—has played a hand in Rockstar’s decision. If so, the company may be wanting Red Dead Redemption 2 to have its own time in the spotlight, rather than tagging along other heavy-hitting AAA titles in the fall. Regardless, more details on Red Dead Redemption 2 will be coming this summer, most likely beginning at E3 in Los Angeles.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the sequel to 2010’s Western-themed open-world action-adventure title, Red Dead Redemption. Both games are developed by Rockstar Studios and published by Rockstar Games, the company behind the ever-popular Grand Theft Auto series. Red Dead Redemption 2 will be available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in spring 2018. No details about the game’s plot or characters have been revealed, but more information will be available down the road.
