Rap Rabbit

Project Rap Rabbit, the rhythm-action revival project from PaRappa the Rapper’s creator, has finally added a gameplay concept video in an attempt to reverse the game’s flailing fortunes on Kickstarter.

The footage is representative of very early work, with placeholder art, music, and lyrics. Instead of attempting to provide a glimpse of what the final game will look like, the developers have taken the opportunity to show off the process of the rap battles, and so the video shows off the dialogue wheel, button prompts for lyrics, and back-and-forth gameplay model:

As noted at the end of the video, the scene is based on a prototype, with the final release promised to have lyrics prepared by a professional rapper, full 3D backgrounds, and detailed animations.

With development being led by Masaya Matsuura and Keiichi Yano, the respective creators of PaRappa the Rapper and Gitaroo Man, Project Rap Rabbit was announced last month with a Kickstarter campaign seeking £855,000. Since then, the campaign has been criticised for showing almost nothing, which has had a predictable effect on the fans’ willingness to support the project, with less than 16% of the total goal raised so far.

Unfortunately, the work-in-progress nature of the new video is unlikely to convince anyone who is not already invested in the project.

If Project Rap Rabbit does manage to achieve the campaign’s funding goal within the next ten days, the game will be expected to arrive on PC and PlayStation 4 in August 2018, with a Switch version currently set as a stretch goal.
