Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has spoken out about Troy Baker’s decision not to reprise the role of Rhys in Borderlands 3—refuting Baker’s claim to not have known about the character’s return.
According to Pitchford, the choice was Baker’s all along.
In response to a question from a fan on Twitter asking why Baker had been replaced, Pitchford says Baker himself turned down the role:
You’ll have to ask Troy. I was told by the audio director that he turned it down. Fortunately, with how Rhys appears in the game, I don’t think it actually matters at all. You’ll see for yourself when the game comes out and you may disagree with me on that or not.

The situation certainly is confusing. Neither party has any particular motivation to lie about what happened, so a simple case of miscommunication might be to blame.
Still, as Pitchford implies, the change is unlikely to affect much, so fans will just have to wait until Borderlands 3’s release later this year to see what that means.
