Yooka-Laylee developer Playtonic Games has revealed it wants to create more games based on the property in the future.
Speaking in an interview with 3DJuegos, Mark Stevenson and Steve Mayles explained that fans could see more types of Yooka-Laylee games. While the studio does not want to focus solely on the franchise, it is not yet finished with those characters.
According to a translation on ResetEra, Nintendo is seen as an inspiration when it comes to spin-off games. Both Mario Kart and Splatoon are given as examples of the types of game that could be made.
“I think we’ll keep working on Yooka Laylee in the future,” said the pair. “We’ve never intended Yooka and Laylee to be the protagonists of all of our games. In the future, we could make a spin-off with one of the many characters from Yooka-Laylee, like Dr. Quack or Dr. Puzz.”
Yooka-Laylee released in 2017 for all major consoles. Developed by a team of former Rare employees, it saw a return to classic 3D platformers like Banjo-Kazooie. Playtonic has also recently launched the 2.5D platformer Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair.
