Pillars of Eternity II Deadfire

Obsidian Entertainment is offering players a chance to experience Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire in a whole new way beginning later this week.

From January 24, starting a new game will allow users to choose whether to utilise the title’s standard real-time combat or a new turn-based battle mode.

This new option has demanded a considerable amount of effort in redesigning the UI and combat encounters throughout the entirety of Pillars of Eternity II.

Speaking to PCGamesN, the project’s director, Josh Sawyer, hinted that the overhaul was at least partly intended to spark renewed interest in the title:

“As time goes on, no matter how good the DLC or expansions are, the attachment rate goes down pretty sharply. If you release content a year after the game comes out, it usually doesn’t matter how good it is.”

Sawyer later adds that testing of the addition has revealed that “there’s a lot more deliberation” behind the choices that players make in battles.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire launched on PC in May last year, earning a Metacritic average of 88. The game is slated to arrive on Playstation 4, Switch, and Xbox One some time this year.
