Phoenix Point creator Julian Gollop has been trying to make his own XCOM-like game for longer than many may realize.

While talking with OnlySP at E3 2019, Julian Gollop commented on his interest returning to the global strategy/turn-based tactics formula. Despite only being able to materialize his efforts now, Gollop says a number of factors kept him from finally birthing his own project.

“It takes a lot of time, effort, and money. When I was at Ubisoft, I did a pitch for a game that was Ghost Recon meets XCOM which ended up becoming Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars—a turn-based launch title for the 3DS. It’s a tactics game, but it didn’t have the scope of an XCOM game. So, I’ve been wanting to do an [XCOM-style] game and Phoenix Point is our first chance to do a fully-blown XCOM-style game.”

Gollop was the creator of the original XCOM and has seen the franchise rise from the ashes of what it had become. Now, with the upcoming Phoenix Point, Gollop can finally throw his hat back in the ring as he added that he has been trying to create another similarly-designed game for “a long time.”

Phoenix Point is currently set to launch September 3 for the Epic Games Store and Xbox One.

Michael Cripe
Michael fell into the OnlySP team toward the end of 2017. You’ll mostly catch his work over in the news area, but that doesn’t mean he won’t dip into the features section every now and then. For him, gaming doesn’t get much better than Metal Gear Solid and Super Mario Sunshine. Though he is a die-hard Nintendo fan, he grew up on PlayStation.
