Red Barrels, the developer behind the upcoming game Outlast, released today some new information about the story behind the indie horror game.

The player controls Miles Upshur, an investigative journalist trying to uncover the secrets of Mount Massive Asylum. Upshur has spent most of his career trying to take down and expose the corrupt, global business group called the Murkoff Corporation. Upshur has spent years uncovering Murkoff’s shady business practices such as creating a monopoly on clean water in third-world Africa. How could this multinational business be connected with the terrifying, life-or-death situation in which the player finds Upshur?

This “one man against an evil corporation” theme serves as the foundation beneath many successful franchises like Resident Evil and Assassin’s Creed, and it seems like Outlast is off to a good start with this premise. We’ll have to wait and see if the plot holds its own with the rest or ends up as just a trope. The game launches on Steam on Sept. 4 and is confirmed for a PlayStation 4 release at a later date.
