It’s been quite an interesting year for gaming this year hasn’t it? Lots of delays, lots of broken games released, lots of industry drama and plenty of other issues abroad that have yet to be fixed. Luckily, it wasn’t all bad this year. There were plenty of fantastic games released this year and great moments through out the year. The year was especially great for us here at OnlySP, so lets take a look back at our third year of publication.
Back in December 2013, I was a tad worried about the status of OnlySP. We had an established site, and we had relativley good numbers for a site so early in its lifeline. The first year of the site we hit around 800,000 unique visitors, and the second year we hit just under 1 million unique visitors. At that point in time, I knew we had to do something different, even more different than being a site that only covered single player games. So while I was off from school, I took that time to restructure the site into something that was unique, and more organized than before and it payed off in a big way this year.
We started off big in January, which lead to us nabbing a partnership with Crave in February, which has been pretty beneficial for us financially. We’re still not making the amount of money that we’d like to be able to pay our writers, but it’s getting there. During this early period of the year, we also had an immensely strong group of writers and media content creators that helped really shape the site leading into the summer months.
This summer was where the site saw its biggest growth, reaching almost 300,000 visitors in both June and July alone, which was a gigantic boost for our traffic numbers. Unfortunately, after E3 this year, gaming news quickly died down, which wasn’t all that unexpected due to being the first year in a new generation of gaming. The lack of things to report on that we found interesting cause our momentum to slow down and at the same time, many of our longtime staff members left the site to explore other avenues.
So, after a very busy start to the year, that ran all the way through the middle of the year, I’ve taken these last few months to dial things down a bit and focus on school and take a mild break from games journalism as this job can make someone become very cynical over time and lose interest in what you’re doing. Over this month long break that I’ve had, I’ve taken some time to play the games that I’ve been amassing over the year, and have begun to enjoy playing games again as I was really in a slump over the last year. Enjoying the games I’m playing has brought me rekindled interest in getting the site to even higher levels in 2015, and to sustain it through the entire year.
2014 was the biggest year for the site as we’ve reached just under 2 million unique visitors this year with over 3 million page views. We’re looking to hopefully surpass this in 2015 as you can probably imagine.
Looking ahead to 2015, it’s going to be a relatively busy year for OnlySP. Starting off the year, we’ll be returning with our Most Anticipated series of articles and videos to lay out the big single player games coming out this year, and you may be surprised to see just how many there are. Continuing on, we’ll be reintroducing our interview series, with hopefully, a new game to show you each and every week, but it may be dialed back to a new game every two weeks. These articles will be similar to what you saw before with our previous interviews, but also a little bit different as well. Each interview will include multiple articles which will discuss the company and team behind the game, how the game went from concept to development stage, and of course we’ll be bringing you all the latest details on said games with new information and media assets when provided.
If you’ve been looking for articles that will make OnlySP a truly unique site that gives you a reason to come back each and every week, this will be it. These articles are a work in progress and will continue to be developed as we come up with new ideas and ways to improve them, but we think you’ll thoroughly enjoy this new look at gaming coverage.
In addition, our Youtube channel is finally back online as we’ve found a new video editor to replace Adam. Just as Adam learned and developed new skills over time as he worked here at OnlySP, we expect the same will happen with Justin, as he continues to improve his commentary and video editing skills to reach a level of professionalism that we look for here at OnlySP. Our new writers also include a group of new reviewers that we’ll be bringing you reviews of all the latest single player titles. They’ve all contributed reviews to the site already so be sure to check our latest reviews and say hello if you haven’t yet.
Finally, our podcast will also be returning relatively soon so be on the lookout for that. It’ll include many members of our new team here at OnlySP.
New features and ideas will also continue to arrive at OnlySP as the new year takes shape and we’ll be sure your the first to hear about it. We’re also always interested in hearing your ideas and suggestions for the site, so feel free to leave a comment here or email me at nickcalandra at onlysp dot com.
2015 is certainly going to be an exciting year for gaming, and most importantly, single player gamers as there’s a buttload of games coming. If you have time now to finish your backlogs, you’d better get it done.
Thanks for taking the time to read this if you did and if you’re a long time reader, thanks for sticking with OnlySP since February 2012. I’ve gained insurmountable experience building this site from the ground up that will certainly follow me through my path to career outside of college. Every single person that’s read an article on this site, commented, and especially worked on the site has helped OnlySP become what it is, and I can’t thank you enough for that. So, with that said, have a wonderful start to the new year and get ready for an awesome year in 2015.
