OnlySP is proud to present more winners of our Best of 2018 awards, including Best VR Game, Best Action-Adventure Game, and Best Remake/Remaster.

12 Best Indie Game CELESTE

Best Independent Game — Celeste

Seemingly cute and innocent from the outside, Celeste is a deep exploration of the human spirit, demonstrating a young girl’s experience with depression and anxiety. With challenging gameplay to keep you on your toes, Celeste demonstrates that the line between independent and triple-A really is diminishing.

12 Best VR Game ASTRO BOT

Best Virtual Reality Game — Astro Bot Rescue Mission

One of the most innovative and engaging games to hit virtual reality, Astro Bot Rescue Mission is a joy to play. Rescuing little robots that live inside your PlayStation 4 controller does not sound entirely innovative on paper, but Sony Japan Studio has created such a joyous experience that players don’t want to miss. This game is one of PlayStation VR’s best offerings.

Runners-up: Beat SaberFirewall: Zero HourTetris EffectThe Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR

13 Best Multiplayer Integration RDR2

Best Multiplayer Integration — Red Dead Redemption 2Red Dead Online

While OnlySP focuses on single-player games, we are not blind to the trends of the industry as a whole; we like to play a little bit of multiplayer too.

While Red Dead Online is far from a perfect and balanced experience, it offers a fun alternative to the single-player mode, integrating settings, characters, and themes seamlessly into the game. Encountering real players in the open world is a fun alternative to the artificial intelligence of the single-player game and offers some interesting insights of human spirit, companionship, and loyalty—the foundations set in Red Dead Redemption 2 come to life in a real open world.

Runners-up: AshenBattlefield VConan ExilesDragon Ball FighterZForza Horizon 4Monster Hunter: WorldSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate

14 Best Action Game AC ODYSSEY

Best Action Game — Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

The Assassin’s Creed series had become rather stale in recent years to several players, but Odyssey has set a new high for the series. Featuring a unique level of freedom and choice, the game immerses players into the world of Kassandra or Alexios throughout an experience they are unlikely to forget. Odyssey is a must-play for any Assassin’s Creed fan.

15 Best Adventure Game DETROIT

Best Adventure Game — Detroit: Become Human

As the title suggests, Detroit forces players to question what being human really means. With an incredible cast, captivating narrative, and innovative gameplay, Detroit: Become Human is one of Quantic Dream’s strongest offerings, and is incredibly deserving of this award.

Runners-up: The Awesome Adventures of Captain SpiritLife is Strange 2SubnauticaReturn of the Obra DinnThe Walking Dead: The Final Season

16 Best Action-Adventure Game

Best Action-Adventure Game — God of War

God of War’s success was a surprise to many—not because it was as innovative or ambitious as other titles released in 2018, but rather because it perfected an already familiar genre; the move from the series’s waning hack-and-slash formula to a narrative-driven action-adventure game should not have worked, yet proved refreshingly brilliant. Placing Kratos in a new setting was similarly fresh for fans, and the humanisation of the previously one-dimensional protagonist made for perhaps the most unexpectedly emotional gaming experiences in recent memory.

17 Best Platform Game CELESTE

18 Best Strategy Game FROSTPUNK

Best Strategy Game — Frostpunk

Few games are as unrelentingly grim as Frostpunk. The game stands out by daring to carve out a wholly unique niche and refusing to pander to the mass-market mentality, and it is certainly deserving of this award.

19 Best RPG MHW

Best Role-Playing Game — Monster Hunter: World

Monster Hunter: World is one of those rare games that brought new comers and veterans together to create an expanding and caring community.

Developed by Capcom, the title delivered an exciting multiplayer experience that encouraged co-operating with others to take down increasingly more vicious and intimidating foes. Each aspect of the game from customising and upgrading the player character and their kitty companion, to battling enormous beasts in a variety of open environments, feels rewarding and fine crafted. Not to mention how insanely delicious the food in this game looks!

21 Best Fighting Game SMASH

Best Fighting Game — Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Ultimate does not represent a huge leap in innovation for the Super Smash Bros. series, but it brings enough to the table to stand above other games in the genre. Featuring every character from previous games in the series—despite the complicated licensing issues that this brought—Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a monolithic fighting game and certainly deserving of this award.

22 Best Remake Remaster SOTC

Best Remake / Remaster — Shadow of the Colossus

Team Ico’s original 2005 title blew players away with its minimalist design, emotional narrative, and immersive gameplay. Bluepoint Games took all of these perfections and added even more improvements—with better graphics, performance, and controls, the Shadow of the Colossus remake sets a new bar for video game remakes, and will hopefully allow a new generation to experience this classic title.

Runners-up: Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, Castlevania RequiemDark Souls RemasteredSpyro Reignited Trilogy

Best Downloadable Content — Marvel’s Spider-Man: ‘The City That Never Sleeps’

Across three episodic DLC packs, Insomniac Games brought players back to the incredible world of Marvel’s Spider-Man, expanding upon the stories of some characters from the main game, as well as introducing some new faces from the comics. While it does not quite match the quality of the main title, ‘The City That Never Sleeps’ is a fantastic addition to the game, and a great excuse to jump back into the Spidey suit.

Runners-up: Far Cry 5 — ‘Lost on Mars’, Kingdom Come: Deliverance — ‘From the Ashes’, Kingdom Come: Deliverance — ‘The Amorous Adventures of Bold Sir Hands Capon’, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom — ‘The Lair of the Lost Lord’
