Again, this one will only be a brief one, and it’ll be slightly off topic. But it’s my column so I can do whatever I want. So there.
A good year.
2013 was a good year.
Firstly, it was a good year for OnlySP, and me specifically. While some great writers left us this year to pursue other things, we also gained some great new writers, all of whom are really enjoying writing for you all. OnlySP’s brand has grown greatly this year, and it’s thanks to the hard work of every writer we’ve had, and you, our readers, who have supported us constantly. So I extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who has made this site great – our writers, past and present, and our fantastic readers. Thanks for everything.
Personally, it’s been a good year for me. I was appointed Editor in Chief back in April – a great honour for me – and I hope I’ve been able to do positive things with my position. So again, thanks to everyone for all your support.
For games, 2013 was a good year. One of the best years for video games that I can remember. We saw the release of some really fantastic games. BioShock Infinite, Grand Theft Auto 5, Assassin’s Creed IV, The Last Of Us, Gone Home… the list goes on and on and on. We will of course have our very own Game of the Year awards, celebrating the best single player games of the year, which will be up on the site very soon.
But the positivity and optimism within the gaming community this year has been wonderful. I know a lot of my Only Speaking Professionally columns address negative elements of the gaming community, but this year has been much more positive and inclusive than previous ones. Some great creators are being accepted and included into this great community, and diversity is being accepted. It’s not perfect yet, but we’re getting there.
And, of course, 2013 saw the release of brand new console hardware, eight years in the making. With the new console generation, we saw a renewed interest in video games and a feeling of genuine excitement. The Xbox One and Playstation 4 have expanded video games into the mainstream entertainment environment, and generated massive interest in the medium. And that’s a great thing. While the new wave of consoles has not yet ushered in a brand new way of playing, the promise is there, and we’re set to see what these machines are capable of starting next year.
So 2013 was a good year.
The changeover of years is a time to reminisce, to look back, to contemplate the good and the bad. To grow and improve and hope for the future. Hope for a good year.
A good year. I hope 2014 will be a good year. For me, for you, for everyone. Take care out there, enjoy the season, and all the best for 2014. We look forward to seeing you all in the new year.
To a good year.
