During a trailer for E3’s upcoming Super Smash Bros Invitational, Nintendo confirmed that a GameCube controller adapter will be coming for the Wii U.

In the competitive scene for Super Smash Bros, Gamecube controllers are the preferred method of input. This announcement is fascinating as the company has never acknowledged this particular gaming community before the announcement of Glory Mode (a no-items Final Destination only online option) in a recent Nintendo Direct. However, will this work with other titles for the Wii U single player games library?

On the Wii, the GameCube controller was an official input for many of its games including Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Sonic Unleashed, Samurai Warriors 3, Muramusa: The Demon Blade, and dozens more. Now, will the Wii U have the same for its previous releases such as Super Mario 3D World, Sonic: Lost World, or the HD Remastering of the Gamecube title, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker or will it simply be used for Super Smash Bros Wii U only? GameCube Virtual Console games may be more valid with this new way of control input.
