Reports leaking out of the Helsinki Slush business conference recently indicated that Tameem Antonaides, lead designer at Ninja Theory (Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West), mentioned that the critically acclaimed developer would be shifting to mobile-only development going forward. With quotes about how the AAA console model is broken, the convenience of mobile and digital media when compared to physical, and the way that Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony are heading in the wrong direction, you can understand why he would feel that it is the best option going forward, though it seems that those sources were reading too much into his comments.

The developer quickly responded to several outlets with the following statement:

“Although we’re very excited by mobile opportunities, and the release of our first mobile title Fightback, we are not transitioning to a mobile only studio. We are currently developing for both mobile and console platforms and intend to do so for the foreseeable future. Tameem’s comments were intended to convey the belief in the studio that the future of gaming is digital, regardless of platform, be it mobile, console or any other form of gaming.”

We have already caught brief glimpses of their next console project in a video giving thanks to the publishing partners and fans a few months ago, but nothing more has been forthcoming since then, though their name was included in a list of developers currently working on the PS4 released by Sony. With DmC: Devil May Cry and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West Premium Edition both scoring highly with us in recent times, most of the team here at OnlySP is relieved by this news.
