The Yakuza series began its rise to popularity in 2005, and with the franchise’s increasing prominence in the West due to Yakuza 0, the series’s director teased some details about a new Yakuza title.
According to Siliconera, in the latest Sega Nama livestream, Toshihiro Nagoshi, director of the Yakuza franchise, teased that he will have some details on a new Yakuza game in roughly two months. Nagoshi did not have much else to say on the subject, but did clarify that he will have all kinds of information saved up to be revealed later. Given the success of previous Yakuza titles and feedback from loyal fans, the reveals should make fans happy when they occur.
Yakuza is an open-world, action-adventure, beat ‘em up video game franchise created, owned, and published by Sega. Toshihiro Nagoshi is the franchise’s creator and director who wished to portray the way of life of the Yakuza—transnational organized crime syndicates originating in Japan. Each installment in the video game franchise initially launches in Japan several months, or even a couple years, before being released worldwide. The most recent addition to the series is Yakuza 0, which launched for PlayStation 3 and 4 in Japan on March 12, 2015, and worldwide on PlayStation 4 on January 24, 2017. Yakuza Kiwami, a remake of the first Yakuza game, was released in Japan on January 21, 2016 and will release worldwide on August 29, 2017.
Thanks to the success of the franchise’s sales (combined 9.3 million units in digital and physical copies sold as of 2016), the Yakuza series has expanded into film adaptations and other mediums, including Web television, books, and radio dramas.
