Mario + Rabbids

Nintendo’s portly plumber and Ubisoft’s Rabbids are set to join forces in a Switch-exclusive RPG later this year, according to a new report.

NintendoWorldReport has posted leaked slides of the upcoming project, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, outlining the concept and plans for the title. The game is being co-developed at Ubisoft’s Paris and Milan studios, both of which have contributed to previous entries in the Rabbids series, as well as a number of other high-profile projects.

Players will be able to choose from eight different characters—Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, and Rabbids dressed up as each of the Mario characters—each of which will have a distinct playstyle and personality. Combat will be turn-based, with the characters able to use firearms for the first time in Mario’s history, while weapons will be both collectible and upgradable. Furthermore, as an RPG, gameplay is weighted in favour of battles, which make up approximately 65% of playtime, as opposed to the 35% made up by exploration.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is estimated to take twenty hours to complete, across four worlds adapted from traditional Mario environments. Finally, although the game is primarily single-player, games will have the choice to engage in two-player co-operative sessions. The title will also be the latest to utilise Ubisoft’s custom-designed Snowdrop game engine, which debuted with The Division, and will also power South Park: The Fractured But Whole and Ubisoft’s new Avatar game, which is not expected to release before 2020.

The game is currently scheduled to be announced at E3, with a surprise release set for either August or September, although today’s leak will most likely result in Ubisoft electing to confirm the game ahead of time. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is expected to launch exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
