Negative Atmosphere

Negative Atmosphere (which looks a lot like the next Dead Space) just got its first video showing off early in-development gameplay .

The game is being developed by indie developer Sun Scorched Studios, and the video below is the first glimpse of the game in action. The development team is clearly taking inspiration from EA’s Dead Space franchise, and the similarities between the two projects is evident.

Although the game is not Dead Space, fans may have the nearest thing to a franchise revival that they are likely to see, albeit with a much smaller budget.–Ex7ekU

From the over-the-shoulder camera, flickering lights, and a HUD that is absent of traditional menus, Sun Scorched Studios is clearly aiming to revive the spirit of the long dormant series.

Even the hilariously brutal melee stomp mechanic seems to have found its way into the game.

Sun Scorched made sure to clarify that the video shows off about five months of work and is not representative of the final product.

Negative Atmosphere has no firm release date or platforms yet, so stay tuned for more information.

OnlySP listed Dead Space as one of its 50 favorite games. Check out the rundown here.

Michael fell into the OnlySP team toward the end of 2017. You’ll mostly catch his work over in the news area, but that doesn’t mean he won’t dip into the features section every now and then. For him, gaming doesn’t get much better than Metal Gear Solid and Super Mario Sunshine. Though he is a die-hard Nintendo fan, he grew up on PlayStation.

  1. Hello OnlySP-Team,

we are the development team of Negative Atmosphere. Thank you for covering our game. We are very glad, you seem to like it.

In your article you mention our demo being an exact copy of Dead Space. We would like to assure you, that this is not the case, as we obviously got inspired by the franchise, but set out to make our own SciFi game, using elements from all the IPs, that we ourselves loved to play. Those, of course, include Dead Space, but also Alien, SOMA, Resident Evil and various other genre-defining works. While we understand, that Dead Space might be the most obvious when only looking at recorded footage, we would like to offer you the opportunity to play the demo yourself, so you can experience the other aspects of it yourself.

Those include but are not limited by:
    – sentient robots that may be your friend one minute and enemies the next
    – a ship-controlling AI as the main antagonist
    – enemies that stalk the player throughout the entire game
    – a semi-open world affected by random events like power or oxygen supply failures
    – a hacking system
    – a dynamic damage system
    – areas of complete darkness

We worked hard to distinguish ourselves from Dead Space and while it is our goal to create a spiritual successor to the franchise, we are in no way, shape or form creating Dead Space 4.

    1. Hello, and thank you for reaching out.
I’d like to apologise for the original copy. It was published without editorial approval, and had we had a chance to look at it beforehand, we absolutely not would have approved the references to Negative Atmosphere as “a straight up copy,” as well as some of the other disrespectful comments that were originally published.

You’re right though in saying that we’re intrigued by Negative Atmosphere, and we would greatly appreciate the chance to play the demo, as well as perhaps discuss with you directly more about your ambitions with the project, if you’re willing.

Please reach out to our Editor-in-Chief at [email protected] if you’d like to set something up.

      1. Thanks for the quick reply we hugely appreciate it. You may also wish to change the title of the piece, but that is up to you. I will be reaching out.

        Thanks again.

  2. But this is still just a direct copy of Dead Space…
Not only in its likeness, but in its core mechanics from what I can tell be the video.
You guys didn’t make a new game, you’re remaking a franchise that was put into stasis 6 years ago because nobody but EA can publish a Dead Space game.
Hopefully EA can pull the money clogging up their butts and actually get to work on games that fans want (like Dead Space), so that what looks like complete knock-offs like this aren’t cluttering Steam’s “Horror” genre.
Seriously, this game may as well be called Dead Space: Negative Atmosphere.
